What The Church Needs Today by Joseph Edem Bassey

The church is in need of members.

"Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved." ~Acts 2:47.

INTRODUCTION TO WHAT THE CHURCH NEEDS TODAY

Do you know WHAT THE CHURCH NEEDS TODAY?

The Earth is generally known as the place of existence for living things. In it we have human beings, plants and animals, as well as other things created by God and man.

Histories have it recorded to the Earth about many things, including the Christian faith.

Many years ago, the coming, trial, crucifixion, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, led to the existence of the Christian faith.

This faith was and is anchored in Jesus Christ and His finished work at the cross. It also aided the existence of the Christian family generally known as the Church.

What Is The Church?

There may be many different ideas about what the church represents. It is worth noting that the church was created as a result of the faith that came to exist through Christ. So what does the church represent?

The church is a general name that describes a set of people from a dynamic family; The Family Of God. It represents a heavenly family that is present on Earth.

The human body has many parts that makes up its completeness and fulfilment. These parts are known as the members, and they all play specific roles, useful to the owner of the body.

Just as the human body exist with a specific name to its owner, the church exist as a name for the body of Christ. Christ is the owner of the church.

The Misconception About The Church

The concept of the church has been misunderstood by many people, leading to the misconception amongst believers in the secular world.

Many people see the church as a building structure, whereas the building structure is the house of the living God. It is the place where the members of the family of God meet together to fellowship with one another.

The house of God is incomplete without the members of the family of God. It is the members that makes up the church.

 Clarification:

Saul, known as Apostle Paul, having caused havoc of the church in the past, was moving from church to church, admonishing and edifying the people. (Acts 8:3, 15:22).

When Peter was imprisoned, the Bible record that prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him. (Acts 12:5).

Our Lord Jesus Christ said in the book of Matthew chapter sixteen verse eighteen,

"And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."

This saying was not of the house like many people may assume it to be. Instead, Jesus Christ was talking about the family of God which He came to establish on Earth; the reunion which is only through Him. In otherwords, the sinners He came to make saints!

Disclaimer: there are many organizations relating the word 'church' as part of their brands. Some of these organizations have positive impact on the society while others have negative impact on the society. The church in the concept of this message is the church of God, and has nothing to do with the others.

What The Church Needs Today

Having known about the establishment of the church, the meaning of the church and the misconception about the church, don't you think it's worth knowing what the church is lacking? Yes it is!

Without taking you farther, I want to disclose to you what the church needs today, especially. Come to think of it, what is in your mind?

It is true that the church has needs that Christ has and is taking care of (Philippians 4:19). Still there is a need that the church must meet for themselves, that is the need of members of the church.

After the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, it is recorded that Jesus Christ entered the house of God and drove out all the business men and women who were trading in the church, overthrew their tables, seats, "And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves." (Matthew 21:13).

Sadly, this is the condition of the church across the globe and this message is a declaration that THE CHURCH IS IN NEED OF MEMBERS, NOT NUMBERS! It is the members that makes up the church, not numbers.

Members are necessary in the church.

Who Are The Members Of The Church?

Do you know that being a friend of a family gives you easy access into the house of the family members? Although it does gives you access into the house, it doesn't make you a biological member of that family. At such, you will not be allowed to hear and partake in certain situations. Same is with the family of God.

Nowadays, so many people are escorts, bench and seat warmers, buyers and sellers in the house of God. They occupy the space and make up the numbers in the church, but they are not members of the church.

The members of the church are those who have totally surrendered to the will of Abba Father by accepting Jesus Christ as their own Lord and Saviour.

They are those who have taken the responsibilities of looking out for other members out there who have not realize what they are missing in the family of God as a result of ignorance or stubbornness.

They are those who are filled with the spirit and word of God which is the food of the spirit.

Those who are ready to pay the price to see that the prodigal sons and daughters of God, repent and return to the family of God.

Dear pastors, deaconesses, choristers, protocols, ushers, instrumentalists, mommies and daddies, brothers and sisters in the house of God, I have one question for you. Are you a member of the church?

Being a title holder in the auditorium is not a qualification. Being punctual in attendance doesn't clear the doubt, neither does it deny the truth that you aren't a member of the family of God.

The time has come to make things right, stop living in pretence. Come out from the number and become a member of the family of God!

Oh dear leaders! Let the increase be of the members not mere numbers, established by faith in Christ Jesus. (Acts 16:5).
